Ujjain - ancient Avantika - is one of the seven Mokshapuris and one of the four Kumbh sites where drops of the Amrit nectar fell during the Samudra Manthan. It was the seat of King Vikramaditya, the home of Kalidasa, and ancient India’s prime meridian, with the Tropic of Cancer crossing the city. At its heart stands Mahakaleshwar, the only south-facing Jyotirlinga, where the 4 AM Bhasma Aarti - the lord smeared with sacred ash - is the most distinctive ritual in the Shaiva world. The Simhastha Kumbh weaves snan in the Shipra at Ram Ghat together with darshan of Mahakal, the lord of time himself.

History & heritage
The Simhastha tradition at Ujjain is documented from at least the 11th century CE, in the Paramara era, and recurs once every twelve years when Jupiter (Brihaspati) enters Leo (Simha rasi) - from which it takes the name Simhastha. The Kumbh is one of four, born of the Samudra Manthan, when nectar fell at Haridwar, Prayagraj, Nashik and Ujjain. Coordinated today by the Madhya Pradesh Simhastha Authority, the Mela rises again as a vast Mela Nagari - a temporary city - along the Shipra, gathering the 13 traditional Akharas, their Naga sadhus and the royal Peshwai processions that precede each Amrit Snan.
What sets Ujjain apart from every other Kumbh is Mahakaleshwar. Reconstructed in the 18th century under Maratha rule - commonly attributed to Diwan Ramachandra Sukthankar - over an ancient sanctum, it is the only south-facing Jyotirlinga, and its dawn Bhasma Aarti continues through the Mela undisturbed. In 2017 UNESCO inscribed the Kumbh on its Representative List of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity, and the Mahakal Lok corridor - a 900-metre promenade of more than 200 statues opened in 2022 - has given the city a new grandeur for the millions who will gather here in 2028.
The Bhasma Aarti is unlike any other ritual in Sanatana Dharma: in the small hours the Mahakal lingam is bathed and then smeared with sacred ash, a reminder that Mahakal is the lord of time and death itself, before whom even the moment of cremation is offered in worship. Ujjain is also the city of Kal Bhairav, where the deity is offered liquor in an ancient and unbroken tradition, and of the Harsiddhi Shakti Peetha, where the elbow of Sati is said to have fallen. The city’s spiritual geography runs deep - Sandipani Ashram, where Krishna and Sudama studied; Mangalnath, regarded as the birthplace of the planet Mars; and the Vedha Shala observatory of Raja Jai Singh II. During the Simhastha the Akharas bathe first at Ram Ghat in fixed precedence, after which the millions of householder pilgrims enter the Shipra - many timing their snan to be followed by the Bhasma Aarti the same dawn.

The day begins long before dawn with the Bhasma Aarti at Mahakaleshwar and the snan at Ram Ghat, and closes with the Shipra Aarti at sunset and the Mahakal Shayan Aarti at night. Strictly no photography inside the Mahakaleshwar Garbhagriha; Aadhaar / valid ID is mandatory at Mela check-ins and Bhasma Aarti booking.

Timings are indicative and shift with the Amrit Snan tithis, crowds and Simhastha Authority advisories. Bhasma Aarti capacity inside the Garbhagriha is commonly given as about 150 - the temple publishes no official figure, so treat it as an approximation. Always confirm before travel - message us and we will share the latest schedule for your dates.
Light cottons - April - May Ujjain heat is severe (38-44°C); carry a dry change for snan and stay hydrated. There is a strict dhoti-only rule for men entering the Mahakaleshwar Garbhagriha for Bhasma Aarti, and saree for women in the sanctum. Aadhaar / valid ID is mandatory at all Mela check-ins and for Bhasma Aarti booking.

How to reach
Ujjain sits on the Shipra in western Madhya Pradesh, on the Western Railway network and a short drive from Indore’s airport. On Amrit Snan days vehicle access is restricted and the final stretch to Ram Ghat is on foot - we plan transfers and heat-aware pacing around the cordons.

A major Western Railway junction with direct trains from Delhi, Mumbai, Ahmedabad, Bhopal and across India. Extra Mela platforms and special trains run from March to May 2028. Indore (~55 km) is the next large railhead.
